  RIP

It is with great sadness that the Rev Leonard Rivett died suddenly while out walking.  During WWII  he was an RAF observer on No XIII Squadron in the Middle East flying Baltimore aircraft.  He was also the vicar in Elvington, a Chaplain to the museum and a knowledgeable author on the life of Sir George Cayley and a significant member of the Cayley Commemoration Committee at Brompton by Sawdon.  His service was in York Minster on Thursday 30 August 07.

YORK Elvington Aerodrome News

The planning application for a six-bay hangar and flight operations has been re-submitted. In June 2005 Secretary of State ruled that an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) is not required.  In September 2006 Elvington Park's Planning Consultants presented all the necessary documentation to York's Head of Planning.   Following May 2007 local elections the newly constituted City of York CC LPA will consider the application for a six-bay GA hangar and operations building soon thereafter.

The hangar will be appropriately named to commemorate Sir George Cayley, the inventor of the aeroplane.

Sir George Cayley's pioneering influence was commemorated with a simultaneous flight of the Cayley Flyer at Salina airport in Kansas when Global Flyer circumnavigated the world. http://www.globalflyer.com/ScienceAviation/index.jsp.

With the planning application likely to be decided in autumn it is the time to please lobby your new councillors, write to the Yorkshire Evening Press and Chairman of York Planning Committee to support the planning application for an operations building and aircraft hangar to ensure that the aerodrome continues to thrive and create jobs.  We would be grateful for copies of any letters of support to Elvington Park Ltd, Halifax Way, Pocklington Industrial Estate, Pocklington, York, YO42 1NP

In the meantime the aerodrome continues in its established uses.

Please visit new airfield web site for aeronautical data and web cam.
